For some years now, many considered the need to record the history of the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita (KUSM-W). Such a document, it was thought, would not only provide a greater understanding of how and why the school came to be, but also instill a sense of pride in its formation and serve to guide its future direction.
Crafting such a piece, it was realized, would require many hours of research and dozens of interviews with persons involved in the school’s formative years.
To take on such a task, the sponsoring organization the MPA, approached Craig Miner, Ph.D., distinguished professor of history at Wichita State University, former chair of the Department of History, and author of six publications of local historical prominence. Miner, it was felt, would apply the same rigorous standards of primary and secondary research to this work as with each of his past projects.
Two organizations must be recognized for their roles in this project, as well as many additional projects over the years. The KUSM-W Dean’s Club, a group of supporters contributing to the school’s efforts, and the Kansas Health Foundation, a private philanthropy dedicated to improving the health of Kansans, generously provided the financial assistance that made this book possible.
Contained within the pages of the book is a portrait of leadership, a written record of the concerted efforts of local physicians, hospital officials, and administrators from the University of Kansas Medical Center and Wichita State University. Their decisions provided for the school’s development in its early years, and continue to be instrumental in its growth over time.
